Social Distancing In Your Car

Getting in your car and going for a drive just for the sheer pleasure of the open road is about as American as baseball and apple pie. Well, COVID may have taken away baseball, at least for a while, but baking—apple pies and otherwise—has become a favorite pastime during lock-down, and social distancing from our cars is the thing to do!

From drive-thru graduations and celebrations to birthday parties and simple coffee dates sitting car-to-car, our friends, neighbors and fellow quarantines have become quite creative with how to come together and still enjoy some of the hallmarks of daily life. Here are some of our favorites.

The Drive-By Party or Party Parade – Have a special occasion coming up, a birthday to celebrate, or just feel like throwing a party? We say go for it! Invite your guests to decorate their cars with happy wishes for the guest of honor, or a fun theme with balloons, streamers, and signs. Then give them a designated time to drive by your house, and voila, you have a party parade! You could even make it a contest and ask your neighbors to vote on the best-dressed car. Be ready to cheer and wave as your guests drive by and, if gifts are in order, have a table curbside for easy no-contact drop-off. You can even have party favors set-out and ready for your guests to simply grab and go.

The COVID Tailgater – This isn’t the kind of tailgate party you might see at a football game. You’ll still want to pack up a lawn chair and grab some grub or yummy munchies, but there’s no need to trek to a stadium or big game (there are none right now anyway). Instead, just meet up with a few friends at a local park for a social-distance gathering. Everyone parks at least one space apart and sets their lawn chair at their own car, or opens their tailgate to sit on and then enjoys their snacks or meal together-not-together. Remember, this is a drive-in event, so stick to the non-alcoholic beverages!

The COVID Coffee Date – Miss meeting up with a friend for a latte and not ready to venture out to a coffee shop? Well then consider taking a cue from the tailgate idea above. Grab a cup of joe and meet up somewhere you can each sip your coffee and have a conversation from a safe distance in your cars.

The Drive-in Movie – Movie theaters may not be opening anytime soon, but the 99w Drive-in is open in Newberg. If you’re missing going to the movies, here’s your chance! There’s nothing quite like watching a movie from your car or the bed of your truck on a warm summer night. Check out their Facebook page for current showings.

As always, your safety is our number one concern. So before you decide to do any driving to social distance with friends, or just escape on the open road, make sure your car maintenance is up to date, your tires are good and your gas tank is full!
