Is comfort your priority? Maybe it is just for it to get you from point A to point B safely?

For most we find that it is for your car to last as long as possible. At Sherwood Auto Repair in Tualatin Oregon our goal to help our customers obtain the lowest operating cost of their vehicles for as long as they want to drive them.

Car longevity (extending the life of your car) is of interest to many car owners and concerns several things: maximum service life in either miles or time (duration), relationship of components to this lifespan, identification of factors that might afford control in extending the lifespan. Barring an accidental end to the lifespan, a car would have a life constrained by the earliest part to fail. Some have argued that rust and other factors related to the body of a car are the prime limits to extended longevity.

We wanted to share with you some of the primary factors that can help ensure you will have your car for many years to come!

  1. Regular oil changes
The oil in your car lubricates the engine and keeps all the parts running smoothly. Over time, the oil gets dirty, thick and sometimes even sludgy. You don’t want that flowing through and clogging up an expensive piece of machinery!
  2. Monitor the key fluids
Check your vital fluid levels, such as battery water, automatic transmission fluid, coolant/antifreeze, and brake fluid.
  3. Watch the lights on your dashboard and handle them quickly
Your engine light on your dashboard is an early indicator of a potential engine problem. It is not there to help illuminate your steering wheel. It’s best to get a diagnostic test from Sherwood Auto Repair as soon as the light comes on, even if you don’t think you have any engine symptoms.
  4. Change the spark plugs as needed
If spark plugs are not checked with regular services, cleaned or changed when necessary, they can cause problems to occur with the vehicle’s engine.
  5. Replace the timing belt as recommended (if applicable)
Belts and hoses are two of the most inexpensive parts to repair or replace in your vehicle’s engine, but they can cause costly damage if they fail.
  6. Replace air filter as required
Your air filter can make a huge difference in your overall driving experience. Especially with how much ash and smoke we have had in our air lately it is vital that you replace those air filters so you can breathe more easily and drive more safely.
  7. Know and use your maintenance manual
Every car has different needs; we check your specific manufacturer’s manual and updates for tune-up requirements.
  8. No sudden starts and stops
Be nice to your car! Give yourself the space between other cars on the road, this is a safety precaution, but it will also improve the longevity of your vehicle.
  9. Allow your car to warm up before driving
Especially if you have an older car it is important to give it time to warm up so that you are not pushing your car before it is ready to go. This is good for the engine and with the cold weather coming means that your car will be nice and warm before you even get into the driver seat.

To keep your vehicle running smoothly, routine maintenance is an absolute necessity. Maintenance will help you avoid major breakdowns and big repair bills as well as help your vehicle perform its best.

In addition, it will help your vehicle keep its resale value over time.
