Like many of you, we recently took part in another tradition -- Super Bowl LII. There’s something special about an event that brings families and friends together to root for their team, dive in to a table full of Super Bowl snacks, watch (mock) the halftime performance, and see the most expensive commercials of the year. We paid special attention to the car commercials this year to see which ones we liked, and which ones dropped the ball. Here’s what we thought about a few from this year’s collection.
Lexus decided to target the Marvel Comic audience with their spot this year. With a tie-in to the new movie, Black Panther, Lexus wants you to know -- if you drive this car, you’re like a Superhero. And a King! It’s sleek and stylish, and whether or not you’re in the market for a Lexus, you’re probably going to want to see the movie. Lexus is made by Toyota, a brand widely viewed as solid performance at a good value. Perhaps Black Panther is one of our more practical superheros?
Kia lets Steven Tyler relive his youth by turning the clock backwards -- a feat only Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler can do by driving in reverse around a race track. They CGI so many wrinkles off the guy it just ends up making some original fans of Aerosmith feel old, and a little sad for the poor actual race car driver who has to watch this non-pro get to travel back in time. But the car looks cool!
There’s something likable about Jeff Goldblum. In this minute-long commercial (each :30 second spot went for a reported minimum of $5 million, so...incredibly expensive), Jeff reprises his role as Dr. Ian Malcolm and outruns a Tyrannosaurus Rex in his new Jeep Wrangler. Spoiler alert: we cut to the Jeep showroom and discover it was all in his head. It’s fun, it’s funny, and it reminds us how rugged and adventurous we’d be if only we bought a Jeep.
Dodge commercials this year were both a win and a loss for the company. They started out strong by making people laugh at the expense of the Minnesota Vikings in an ad that featured a truck-full of tough Vikings rockin’ out to Queen. But then the company followed that with the most controversial car spot that aired this year, using Martin Luther King’s speech -- one that doesn’t exactly support advertisers -- to help sell their cars. We fix cars, we don’t manufacture them, but it seems to us if there’s any question about whether or not a spot might be widely panned, it’s probably safer to just stick with the Vikings.
When it comes to feel-good spots, Toyota makes a touchdown with this one. You can’t help but be moved and inspired by skier Lauren Woostencroft’s journey. The commercial doesn’t really have anything to do with cars, but Toyota is a car company and it’s never a bad thing to let consumers know that your partnership with the Paralympics supports individuals like this amazing achiever. Will we remember the spot? Yes. Will we remember it was for Toyota? Maybe, but it sure made us feel good.
